When I was doing TV presenting, I remember this one moment that completely changed my game. When I was first starting out, I sent a showreel (a collection of my camera footage) to hundreds of producers around the country. Only two replied; one said, “No thanks” and the other said, “It’s obvious that you know how to present to camera, but you have no personality on-screen whatsoever”.
Talk about a shutdown. Whilst I needed to nurse my bruised ego for a while, I realised that this was the best feedback I had ever gotten. He was right. I was hell-bent on being “perfect” in-front of that lens, that I forgot to include other parts of my personality, the parts that make me relatable and “human”.
I re-did my whole showreel. I thought long and hard about my brand personality, the audience I was speaking with and what my brand really stood for. I included bloopers, fun scenes of me interacting and participating in different activities and lots of my true personality. It was only then that I scored some dream opportunities; a travel show on Foxtel, a spot on a Channel 10 morning show and TV commercials.
From there, I landed a job teaching budding TV Presenters at an organisation in Melbourne for 7 years.
The point of me sharing this is; I see what I did “wrong” happening so often. As soon as a lens is placed in-front of us, most of us freeze up, get self-conscious and disconnect from the emotion of our material. So we avoid it. It becomes too daunting and completely out of comfort zone.
Yet, video is one of the most effective ways of connecting with our clients - when done well. More and more stats are being revealed that video coverts 70% higher than photo and text. Social media platforms are also prioritising the circulation of videos over any other content.
So, it’s time for every clever personal brand to be taking full advantage of it. I have the full team ready go to, to produce the most effective video formats that every business owner needs:

CREATIVE INTERIOR DIRECTOR
Produced for her website, this video is a play on the famous "Vogue 72 questions" format. The camera follows Cath Tonkin through a beautifully designed home as she answers some fun questions about herself and her business.
"Staring down the barrel of a camera and keeping on the move while delivering lines and trying to be “real” in one unedited take was a test for the crew and me. Colette and the team was patient and encouraging, telling me “this is the hardest thing to do even for professional presenters” . Colette believed I could handle it, and we did it! I’m still getting accustomed to the idea of seeing myself on film, however I can’t wait to do more". Cath Tonkin
